Video Poker is a popular game that can be gambled on in casinos across the world, or in your house on your home computer, using an Internet connection. The game rules are absolutely simple and involve the player trying to achieve the greatest combination of cards achievable in order to acquire money. In this respect it is much the same as a regular game of poker, without the line of contact with any other players. Of course, techniques used in a physical game of poker, such as bluffing, will be useless here.

The game of Electronic Poker starts when the player inserts credits (either tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and pushes the play button. A hand of five cards will then be "given out" on the screen.

The Electronic Poker machine also has hold buttons, and enthusiasts should now choose which cards to hold and which to throw away. For the cards the gambler wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons should be pressed so that they light up. The player can choose to keep any amount of cards they wish, whether it is all or none.

After the gambler has selected which cards he or she wishes to retain, they should press ‘deal’, at which point any new cards are needed they will be handed out. The hand is now finished, with the Video Poker machine scanning the cards to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands printed on the pay out schedule.

Typically, the minimum succeeding hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money growing for each better hand. A common list of winning hands begins with jacks or better, and moves on to two pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It should be known that the payout schedule can change from game to game, so that knowledgeable players are able to choose the most beneficial ones each time.

Once the first round has played out, the player can either choose to stay on and try to to maximize their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any cash that has been won. Additionally, several styles of the game allow the bettor a chance to double their winnings, in which situation another game is played. There are also differences among specific machines, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other differing aspects to enhance playability.
