In this respect it is much the same as a classic game of poker, without the line of contact with any other players. Of course, techniques employed during a real-life game of poker, such as bluffing, will be useless in Video Poker.
The game of Video Poker begins when the bettor puts credits (either tokens, tickets or cash) into the machine and pushes the deal button. A hand of five cards will then be "distributed" on the video screen.
The Electronic Poker game also has buttons with ‘hold’ printed on them, and players will need to now decide which cards to keep and which to discard. For the cards the bettor wishes to retain, the ‘hold’ buttons must be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can decide to keep any amount of cards they want, whether it is all or none.
After the enthusiast has chosen which cards he or she would like to keep, the player will then press ‘deal’, at which point any fresh cards will be handed out if desired. The game is now finished, with the Electronic Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands printed on the pay out schedule.
Generally, the lowest winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money getting larger for each better hand. A list of common winning hands begins with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It goes without saying that the payout schedule can change from machine to machine, so that experienced players are able to select the most beneficial machine each and every instance.
After the first round has completed, the player can either decide to continue on and try to to increase their winnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any money that they may have won. Additionally, a few versions of the game allow the bettor an opportunity to double their profits, in which case another hand is played. There are also variations between individual games, with some virtual decks including wild cards and other differing elements to increase playability.
